Head-on Collision in Friendship Kills One

Police said the crash occurred Saturday morning on Chesapeake Beach Road near Sansbury Road.

A Calvert County man was killed and another was seriously injured in a head-on collision on Chesapeake Beach Road early Saturday morning.

According to a release, at 5:44 a.m. on Saturday Anne Arundel and Calvert County police responded to a report of a collision on Chesapeake Beach Road near Sansbury Road.

Officers arrived to find two vehicles, a Ford Taurus and a Ford Expedition, in the westbound lane with heavy front-end damage. The Expedition was on its side and engulfed in flames.

The Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Company pronounced the operator of the Ford Taurus, Ronald Joseph Lignelli, 61, of Chesapeake Beach, dead at the scene, according to the release.

Bystanders pulled the driver of the Expedition from the vehicle before it caught fire. The man is now in stable condition at Prince George's Trauma Center, police said.

According to police, an initial investigation said the Taurus was traveling east on Chesapeake Beach Road when it crossed the double yellow lines into the path of the Expedition. The vehicles struck head-on, coming to rest in the westbound lane near the shoulder.

The investigation is ongoing, according to a release, and it is unknown if excessive speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
