Hate Crime Fugitive Arrested by U.S. Marshals in Edgewater

A spokesman for the U.S. Marshals said the fugitive is part of the Arian Nation.

U.S. Marshals arrested a fugitive in Edgewater on Wednesday for violating his probation related to a conviction for a hate crime as well as weapon and drug possession charges, according to a U.S. Marshals spokesman and criminal investigator David Neumann.

Michael Patrick Dawson was arrested around 1 p.m. between the Mayo Post Office and Mayo Elementary after violating probation related to his conviction on several charges, Neumann said.

Neumann called Dawson "a fugitive" and said he was convicted of simple assault and a hate crime from an incident in Washington DC.

"[Dawson] pulled a knife on a civilian in [Washington, DC], a cab driver, and told him, 'I'm going to kill you. I already killed your brother,'" Neumann said.

Neumann also said that Dawson is a member of the Arian Nation, a white supremecist organization.

A Special Response Team assisted in Dawson's arrest because of the possibility that Dawson may have had weapons in his possession, Neumann said.

It was concerning to me because it happened during recess time at Mayo ES with the kids outside and if there was a potential for him to be armed at all, the first priority of the police involved should have been the kids' safety. They were pulled inside after the principal found out what was happening, but it still worried me. I just happened to be pulling into the school right after he had been arrested. Thank you for the updated information.

Angela, I'm quite sure that the kid's safety was the priority of police. If any kids had been harmed in the incident, it likely would have been as a result of action taken by the fugitive. The police are thoroughly trained in weapon handling in and around crowds of people.

Funny how so many jumped to the conclusion that it was drugs. Glad to see they did a good job catching him.. thanks for keeping us posted!

I guess I just don't know the details here, cause I don't get the sale flyer formerly known as the Capital newspaper. The headline is that he is a "hate crime " fugitive. Not sure what he did at the school that violated his probation, but I'm really interested in knowing why what he did in DC was a hate crime. Pulling a knife on anyone is a felony, so why the hate crime label? My own opinion? That term gets overused and misused troo often. A crime is a crime, and there are laws that say so. Isn't any crime a hate crime relaly? Like the person who mutilated and murdered the 10 year old in Colorado last week, I belieb a deep hatred of something or someone sparks this stuff. But, I digress. :) I still don't understand the headlne here.

It is only a hate crime when a white person does something like this, if a black person uses a racial slurr and shoots a white person it will never be called a hate crime, this past week six blacks beat up two white people in Salisbury, they called it a robbery.

How about the police letting the principal know what was happening. The police obviously knew how about not letting the kids outside at all. What do you think? Oh by the way I dont think the police would be the ones to hurt the children.
