Gift Guide 2010: Shopping for Men

Shop locally for a gift your man will love.

Whether it's your dad, brother, husband, or son, shopping for the guy in your life can be tough. Edgewater Patch recently talked to local businesses in Edgewater and Davidsonville to sort out ideas for holiday giving. Whether he is into sports, music, tools, technology, or the finer things in life – we found something for every man on your list.

If He's Active

Edgewater-Davidsonville has two challenging 18-hole golf courses. The Golf Club at South River, designed by Brian Ault, is a par-71 course that offers gift certificates in any dollar amount for play, luncheons and cart use. Davidsonvile's Renditions Golf Course is offering a $99 Christmas special that includes one round of golf for two players, redeemable until April 2011 and good for any tee time, any day they're open. The 18 holes of the par-72 Renditions course offers players an opportunity to replay replica greens of golf's Grand Slam events. For example, Renditions holes six, seven and eight are from this year's Masters, the tenth is from this year's PGA championship, and the 17th is from this year's U.S. Open.

Marty's Sporting Goods on Mayo Road  is an authorized Buck brand knife dealer, great for any angler or hunter on your list. In addition to a full line of hunting and fishing gear, Marty's also sells Bayou Classic Steamer Sets – a perfect choice if your man loves steamed crabs. West Marine is offering a Garmin GPS with both nautical charts and land maps for a special price of $199. The store carries a a full line of marine GPS systems, from the entry price-point of $200 up to and including an in-console model that retails for $3500.

The Way to his Heart

If the way to your guy's heart is through his stomach, you've got lots to choose from in the area. Notably, Adam's The Place for Rib on Mayo Road has, hands down, some of the best barbecue in the state, and there isn't a man alive that would turn down a steak dinner, especially if it's coming from The Steakhouse in the South River Colony Main Street. Both establishments have gift certificates available for purchase, and that — plus the promise of some quality time with friends and family — is sure to please any man. Alternatively, give him a gift certificate to the Greene Turtle, located in the South River Colony Market, and promise him a night out watching sports with the boys – it'll be a home run.

If your fella fancies spirits as part of his holiday cheer, give him a special treat and pick up a bottle of Galway Bay Irish Egg Nog from the Killarney House on West Central Avenue in Davidsonville. For $20 a bottle, he can enjoy an old Irish recipe that contains a unique blend of alcohol, spices, and Irish cream that's a festive departure from his usual drink of choice.

A good pick for a brother or co-worker comes from everyone's favorite coffee shop, Starbucks, located at South River Crossing on Solomon's Island Road. Here, you can purchase gift cards in any denomination, and an assortment of coffee blend gift boxes, travel mugs and tumblers, and coffee press machines.

Special Interests

For the musician in your life, check out Bay Tunes Guitars in South River Colony Market. Sign him up for guitar, drum, or even voice lessons. Single-session lessons are offered for $30, and weekly lessons are available for $25 per session when purchased on a monthly basis.

For the handyman, Ace Hardware offers product lines from Craftsman and Black & Decker, as well as a full line of Weber grills and grill supplies, plus accessories for the bird enthusiast.

Davidsonville offers two shopping stops for the gardener on any list: Homestead Gardens and Tropic Bay Water Gardens. At Homestead, think about gifting that expensive tree he's been eyeing. Tropic Bay can fulfill the dream of a tropical oasis with waterfalls and fish ponds in any Maryland yard.

Let's not forget those tech-savvy teenagers. At Executive Wireless, at South River Crossing on Solomon's Island Road, find gadgets to fit any budget, including Verizon's Droid smart phone, with styles that range in cost from $49.99 to $199.99 after rebate. With the $29.99 all-inclusive data plan, any teen can text away without breaking the bank.

Of course, a no-fail option is a gift card to any of these businesses. They are available almost anywhere and offer the flexibility of letting your recipient choose his own gift. They also make a great last-minute gift if you're running short on shopping time. This is especially good for those who have specialized hobbies, like anglers, or have jobs and hobbies that require specialized tools.

The main point is to give him a gift that speaks to and supports his interests. He'll appreciate that you took the time to find him something he's genuinely interested in, and you'll appreciate that you saved time  by shopping locally.
