A Shady Side family was displaced from its home early Sunday after a fire broke out in the 6300 block of West Shady Side Road.

According to Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Chief Michael Cox, firefighters responded to the dwelling fire around 12:45 a.m. and saw smoke and fire coming out of a two-story, single-family home.

It took 40 firefighters about 30 minutes to put out the flames. Cox said the fire was difficult to fight because there were not any fire hydrants nearby. Firefighters drew water from a nearby creak instead.

Cox described damage to the home as “significant,” but did not have a cost estimate.
